So who are the players in this business from the design community side? (I will address the more industrial market in another post but for today we are discussing the design community.)
Owner: this is the person who will own the building being built. This could be the actual owner or this could be a developer who is then going to rent the space to others.
Architect: this person or firm is hired by the owner to design the building. All aspects of the building.
Engineer: this person is hired by the Architect to design the guts of the building. The Mechanical item such as HVAC, Electrical such as power and Plumbing for water and sewage. This firm is often referred to as a MEP firm.
Lighting Designer: this person creates the environment through how they light the spaces. The select the proper lighting for each space to produce the effect the owner and the architect want. They work closely with both the architect and the engineer on the project. They may be hired by the architect or the engineer or the engineering firm may also have lighting designers on staff.
These are the players on the design side of a project. Part 2 will cover the players on the Build side of a project.
